Everything but Hanji Paper

When The Hanji Crew was in Madison last week, we took a side trip to the northern suburbs of Chicago to visit Super H Mart, a Korean supermarket extraordinaire. It's reminiscent of the markets in Seoul, only under one gigantic roof. It has all things Korean -- kimchi refrigerators, a Korean food court, tanks of live seafood, unrecognizable produce, Korean cooking utensils... everthing but hanji paper. We have wonderful Korean markets here, but this is entirely different. It's not just a store, it's a destination.

Here's a glimpse of the fabulous things we saw:

A store with an entire section of kimchi has got to be good.

Lots of snacks. Not a Dorito in sight.

Korean convenience food.

So. Much. Squid.

Supermarket recipes

Maddog in one of the seaweed aisles.

This sounds amazing.

Lunch at the Super H Mart was fantastic. My steamed pork dumplings were huge, fresh and absolutely delicious.

This was my favorite find. Fresh, bite-size, warm walnut cakes filled with red bean paste and a half walnut. We watched the owners of the kiosk make them, then gobbled them on the way back to Madison.
